Steel or Fibreglass Entry Door for an Ontario Winter? An Honest Comparison

Ask ten contractors whether you should buy a steel or a fibreglass entry door and you'll get ten confident answers, most of them shaped by whatever's sitting in the warehouse. So here's ours, with the parts that don't flatter either material left in.

Short version of what follows: both doors are foam-filled and both perform well on paper. The differences that matter in an Ontario winter aren't the R-value on the sticker. They're what happens to steel when it cycles from plus 30 to minus 25 every year, what road salt does to a scratched bottom edge, and how a bowed slab quietly stops sealing. We'll walk through construction, the six real points of difference, a comparison table, the exposure test that should actually make your decision, what glass inserts do to the math, current Ontario pricing, and the rebate that applies to both. Fair warning: our conclusion isn't "buy the expensive one."

What's actually inside each door

Neither one is solid anything. That surprises people.

A steel entry door is two galvanized steel skins, usually 24-gauge or the heavier 20-gauge, bonded to a perimeter frame of wood or steel, with polyurethane foam injected into the cavity between them. Our steel entry doors use 24-gauge galvanized skins, a foam core, a reinforced lock block and a baked-on finish. The foam does the insulating. The steel does the structure and the security.

A fibreglass entry door swaps those steel skins for moulded fibreglass-reinforced polymer, over a composite or wood stile-and-rail frame, around the same polyurethane core. Our fibreglass entry doors use woodgrain-textured skins and reinforced stiles. You'll see it spelled fiberglass on most product labels and warranty paperwork, which is the American spelling that stuck to the industry.

So both doors insulate with the same stuff. A well-built slab of either type with a two-inch polyurethane core lands around R-5 to R-6. If the brochure comparison stopped there, it'd be a coin flip.

It doesn't stop there.

Six places the two materials actually part ways

1. Steel conducts. Fibreglass doesn't.

This is the big one, and it's physics, not marketing. Steel moves heat extremely well. Unless the door has a proper thermal break separating the outer skin from the inner one, cold travels straight through the metal to the inside face.

You feel this in January. Put your palm on a builder-grade steel door on a minus 22 morning and it's genuinely cold. On the worst days you'll get condensation on the interior face, sometimes a rim of frost around the edges where the metal meets the frame. That moisture has to go somewhere, and it usually goes into the paint and the trim.

Fibreglass barely conducts at all. The inside face stays close to room temperature. No cold plate, no frost line.

A quality steel door with a real thermal break closes most of this gap. A cheap one doesn't have one.

2. Thermal bowing, which nobody warns you about

Steel expands when it's hot and contracts when it's cold. Ontario asks a lot of it. A south-facing door here can hit 60°C surface temperature on a July afternoon and minus 25 on a February night. That's a punishing annual cycle, and dark colours make it worse because they absorb more solar heat.

Over years, that cycling can bow the slab. A bowed door stops meeting its weatherstripping evenly, usually at the top corner or along the latch edge. Now you have a draft that no amount of adjusting the strike plate will fix, because the door isn't flat anymore.

We see this most on west-facing and south-facing entries with no overhang, in dark colours. Charcoal and black doors are having a moment right now, and they're the ones that bow.

Fibreglass moves much less with temperature. It stays flat and keeps its seal.

3. Road salt

Ontario salts everything. That salt goes airborne off the driveway and the road, lands on your door, and sits at the bottom edge where meltwater collects.

Steel is fine while the finish is intact. Scratch through it, though, and salt plus moisture starts corrosion at that point. In a salted climate a deep scratch at the kick area can show rust inside a single season. Once it starts, it spreads under the paint.

Fibreglass doesn't corrode. A scratch is a cosmetic problem, not a structural one.

4. Dents and the snow shovel

24-gauge steel dents. A shovel handle, a delivery cart, a bike pedal, a kid's hockey bag. And a dent in steel is permanent. You can fill and repaint it, but you'll always know where it is.

Fibreglass resists denting well because of how the skin is moulded. It can crack under a hard, concentrated impact, but that takes real force and it's rare in residential use.

5. Security

Steel wins here, and it isn't close on raw material strength. A steel skin over a reinforced lock block is harder to defeat than a fibreglass one.

That said, most forced entries don't go through the slab. They go through the jamb, splitting the frame at the strike. Which is why the lock matters more than the material. Our multi-point locking systems engage at the top, middle and bottom, spreading the load across the whole frame instead of one small strike plate. That upgrade does more for security on either door than choosing steel over fibreglass.

6. How it looks in five years

Fibreglass takes a convincing woodgrain texture and can be stained, so you get an oak or mahogany look without the sanding and refinishing that real wood demands. Finishes are engineered against UV, though a west-facing door will eventually fade and want refinishing.

Steel is painted. A baked-on factory finish holds up well, but a repaint down the road never quite matches the original, and touch-ups at dents and scratches are visible up close.

The honest verdict: your exposure decides this, not the material

Here's the part most comparison articles skip. Neither material is better in the abstract. The right answer changes depending on where the door sits.

Go fibreglass if:

  1. The entry faces south or west with no porch roof or overhang

  2. You want a dark colour on a sun-exposed door

  3. The door takes direct driving snow off an open field or lake side

  4. It's close to a heavily salted driveway or road

  5. You want a wood look and you don't want to refinish real wood every few years

  6. You plan to stay in the house fifteen years or more

Go steel if:

  1. The entry is sheltered under a deep porch or a recessed entry

  2. It faces north or east and gets little direct sun

  3. It's a side door, a garage-to-house door, or a rear entry

  4. Security is your first concern and budget is tight

  5. It's a rental property or you're selling within a few years

  6. You're doing several openings at once and the cost difference multiplies

A Barrie bungalow with a covered front porch facing the street to the north? Steel, and put the savings into a better lock and proper air sealing. A newer build in Oshawa with a black door facing west, full afternoon sun, no overhang? Fibreglass. We've replaced too many bowed steel slabs on exactly that exposure to recommend anything else.

The thing that matters more than either material

You can buy the best fibreglass door on the market, install it poorly, and end up with a draftier entry than a builder-grade steel unit that was fitted properly.

Most of the cold air getting past your front door isn't going through the slab. It's going around it. The gaps that cost you comfort are the ones between the frame and the rough opening, the ones under an out-of-level threshold, and the ones where compressed weatherstripping has taken a set and stopped springing back.

That's why we shim and level the frame across the full opening, insulate the perimeter cavity rather than leaving it hollow, and check the compression seal on all four sides before we call a job finished. An adjustable sill lets us dial the sweep contact after the house has moved a season or two.

If your current door is drafty and only a few years old, get the installation looked at before you replace anything. Sometimes it's a threshold adjustment, not a new door. What glass inserts do to the comparison

The minute you add a decorative glass insert, sidelites or a transom, the slab material starts to matter less. Glass is the weak thermal point in any door, and the more of it you have, the more the glazing package drives performance rather than the skin material.

ENERGY STAR Canada actually sorts doors into three glazing categories, opaque, up to 50% glass, and more than 50% glass, with different performance thresholds for each. Natural Resources Canada keeps a searchable list of ENERGY STAR certified doors you can check any model against before you buy.

If you want a lot of glass, ask for Low-E coated, argon-filled inserts with a warm-edge spacer. That combination does far more for a half-lite door than arguing about steel versus fibreglass.

The spread inside each range comes from size, glass, sidelites, hardware and finish. A plain 32-inch steel slab in a standard opening sits at the bottom. A stained fibreglass double door with sidelites and a transom sits at the top.

The gap between a basic steel door and a mid-grade fibreglass one is real, but it's smaller than most people expect once installation, hardware and disposal are in the same quote. Ask for line items, not a single number.

Both qualify for the rebate

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program, delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with provincial backing, pays $100 per eligible door and window rough opening. Steel or fibreglass, it doesn't care about the material. It cares that the model is ENERGY STAR certified and registered.

Two things trip people up. The product has to be certified before you buy, not argued about afterward. And most homeowners get more back by bundling the door with other upgrades in the same project rather than doing it alone. Program terms shift, so confirm the current rules before your install date.

We list the model number and certification on every quote, because a missing certification number is the most common reason a rebate application stalls.

Should you add a storm door?

Sometimes. A storm door adds a still-air pocket in front of the entry, cuts wind-driven rain and snow off the main slab, and gives you a screen in summer.

One caution, and it's the reason we don't recommend them universally. A storm door in front of a dark, sun-facing door traps heat between the two. That trapped heat is exactly what accelerates bowing on a steel slab and finish fade on a fibreglass one. If your entry gets hard afternoon sun, either skip the storm door or choose a full-vent model you can actually open.

Which lasts longer in an Ontario winter, steel or fibreglass? Fibreglass, on an exposed entry. It doesn't rust, doesn't dent and doesn't bow with temperature swings. A sheltered steel door under a deep porch can match it, because the weather never reaches it.

Do steel doors rust in Ontario? Only once the finish is breached. Road salt is the accelerant. A scratch at the bottom edge of a steel door near a salted driveway can show corrosion within one winter, so touch up chips promptly.

Why is my steel door cold and wet on the inside? Steel conducts, so on very cold days the interior face drops below the dew point and condenses room moisture. A door with a proper thermal break reduces this. Persistent wetness also points to weak weatherstripping.

Is fibreglass worth the extra money? On a sun-exposed, salt-exposed or unsheltered entry, yes. On a sheltered side door or rear entry, usually not. Put the difference into a multi-point lock and proper air sealing instead.

Can a fibreglass door be painted or stained? Yes. Woodgrain-textured fibreglass takes stain for an oak or mahogany look, and smooth fibreglass takes paint. Both refinish more easily than steel, which never quite matches on a repaint.

Are steel doors more secure than fibreglass? The steel slab is stronger. But most break-ins split the jamb, not the door, so the locking system and frame reinforcement matter more than the skin material on either door.

Do both materials qualify for the Ontario rebate? Yes. Eligibility depends on ENERGY STAR certification and registration, not on the material. Ask for the model number and certification on your written quote.
